IS Ciao Cindy, raccontaci di te. Chi sei, dove vivi, come sei finita New York…

CK Ciao! Mi chiamo Cindy, vivo a New York e sono un’illustratrice freelance. Sono nata a Seoul, Corea e mi sono trasferita negli Stati Uniti una decina di anni fa.

IS Come descriveresti i tuoi lavori a una persona che li vede per la prima volta?

CK I miei lavori sono spesso commoventi o malinconici. Lavoro principalmente in digitale, utilizzando efficacemente gli spazi negativi nella composizione, ma mi piace mixare il digitale con tecniche più materiche. Mi piace realizzare illustrazioni emotive con le quali le persone possono relazionarsi.

IS Dove trovi le ispirazioni per i tuoi lavori?

CK Trovo ispirazione dalle persone intorno a me, dalle nostre conversazioni sulle piccole cose quotidiane. Ci sono molte storie ordinarie ma preziose che vorrei illustrare. Gli artisti che stimo e dai quali cerco di apprendere più possibile sono Shaun Tan, Oliver Jeffers, Liz Climo, e Brian Rea.

IS Cosa significa per te essere una donna forte?

CK Per me, una donna forte è chi conosce e accetta le proprie emozioni e i proprio desideri. Decide per se stessa ed è consapevole degli ostacoli e delle aspettative degli altri, e continua a lavorare sodo e si mette alla prova per raggiungere i propri obiettivi. Cerco sempre di tenerlo a mente!

IS Raccontaci dei tuoi progetti futuri…

CK Il mio sogno è sempre stato quello di pubblicare un libro illustrato, ma al momento mi sto focalizzando più sull’editoria.

Lavoro molto con emozioni e sentimenti, ma sono interessata a creare illustrazioni su temi sociali e culturali. Il mio sogno sarebbe quello di imbattermi in una mia illustrazione o una pubblicazione mentre cammino nelle strade di New York. Sarebbe davvero un sogno che si avvera, soprattutto perché trasferirsi a New York dalla Corea non è stata una scelta facile, ma sicuramente legata al mio desiderio di diventare illustratrice.

IS Who are you?

CK Hello! My name is Cindy, and I am a freelance illustrator living and working in New York City. I was born in Seoul, Korea, and I came to the United States about ten years ago.

IS How would you describe your artistic style?

CK My artworks are often heartwarming or melancholic. I create artwork that feels natural and comfortable by adding the brush strokes and texture of traditional media as well as effectively using the negative spaces in composition. With atmospheric and emotional works, I aim to visually narrate stories that viewers can relate to.

IS What is a strong woman for you?

CK To me, a strong woman is someone who knows and accepts how she feels or what she wants. She decides for herself while being aware of the obstacles and the expectations from others, and continues working hard and challenging herself to achieve the goal. I always keep this in mind.

IS who is/are your inspiration/s?

CK I find story inspirations from people around me, from our conversations about little–somewhat unimportant–moments of everyday life. There are a lot of ordinary but precious stories I want to illustrate. Also, I get inspirations from beautiful works by Shaun Tan, Oliver Jeffers, Liz Climo, and Brian Rea.

IS Tell me about your future projects and dreams

CK Creating my own illustrated book has always been my dream project, but I am focusing on making editorial illustrations these days. I mainly talk about feelings and emotions, but these days I am more interested in creating works about social and cultural themes. One more thing: I have a dream to spot my works on either a publication or an advertisement while walking on the street in NYC. It would be a wonderful ‘Dream Come True’ moment for me since it wasn’t a small decision to move to New York all the way from Korea to get closer to my dream.
