Intervista a Quentin Monge

Illustrazioni Seriali ha finalmente incontrato Quentin Monge, illustratore francese, nato nel sud della Francia che nell’ultimo anno, con le sue illustrazioni colorate, accattivanti e vagamente malinconiche, ha collaborato con molti brand europei.

Misterioso sui social, dove pubblica solo le sue opere, ha risposto alle nostre domande:

Illustrazioni Seriali: Ciao Quentin, prima di tutto. Come stai?

Quentin: Sto molto bene, grazie! Sono appena tornato da una vacanza e la mia testa è ancora lì.

IS: Quanti anni hai e da dove vieni?

QM: Ho 29 anni e sono nato e cresciuto nel sud della Francia, a Saint Tropez, dove sono tornato a vivere da poco.

IS: Le tue origini hanno influenzato la tua visione artistica?

QM: Non in maniera consapevole, almeno fino a 2/3 anni fa. Da quando ho iniziato a lavorare seriamente come artista, mi sono invece accorto che molte immagini e riferimenti provengono dal mio vissuto, sotto il sole della Costa Azzurra. E questa idea di estate infinita è poi emersa anche nei miei dipinti.

IS: Cosa significa per te essere un artista? Trovi delle differenze tra il tuo lavoro commerciale come illustratore e il tuo lavoro di artista, che non è soggetto a commissione?

QM: Per me essere un artista significa sentirsi liberi di creare una connessione tra quello che vive dentro di sé e quello che si ha bisogno di esprimere, senza paura e senza pregiudizi.

Non è facile trovare un giusto bilancio tra il mio lavoro personale e il lavoro commerciale. Cerco di ridurre al minimo il divario che c’è tra i due tipi di lavoro, ma a volte il lavoro commerciale ti porta molto lontano da quello che sei e da quello che vorresti mostrare attraverso il tuo lavoro. Idealmente mi piacerebbe sentirmi libero di esprimermi al 90%.

IS: Quali sono i riferimenti artistici e culturali che ti influenzano?

QM: Ne nomino alcuni: il cubismo, le scatole di fiammiferi, la pop art, i dialetti, la folk art e l’arte africana in generale. Ma quello che mi piace di più è disegnare immerso nella natura, che sia una spiaggia o una foresta vicino casa. Se ho bisogno di ispirazione, è in questi posti che la trovo.

IS: Pensi che i social media e le piattaforme online siano utili per diffondere il tuo lavoro?

QM: Sì, mi ha aiutato molto. 4 anni fa non avevo ancora uno smartphone e ho iniziato per caso a postare le mie illustrazioni con il telefono della mia ragazza. Ho subito ricevuto dei buoni riscontri e alcune piccole commissioni.

I social sono un buon mezzo per ottenere riscontri ma sicuramente una carriera lavorativa non si può basare solo su questo.

IS: Progetti futuri?

QM: Qualche mostra collettiva, una residenza d’artista e molti viaggi!

IS: Dear Quentin, how are you?

QM: I’m very well thank’s, just came from holiday and my mind hasn’t came back yet. 

IS: How old are you and where do you come from?

I’m 29 years old and I come from south of France in Saint Tropez, where I recently came back to live and work.

IS: Do your origins influence your artistic vision?

I wasn’t sure of this until 2/3 years ago when I really started to take this artistic path seriously. Things started to emerge from my childhood under the sun of the French Riviera. And this idea of the endless summer started to appear in my work.

QM: What does it mean to you being an artist? Do you feel any difference between your commercial work as illustrator and your art as artist?

For me it’s being free to connect to what’s inside yourself and what you need to express without fear and judgement. It’s hard to keep a right balance between personal and commercial work. I tend to reduce the gap between both but sometimes commercial project drag you away from what you are and from what you really want to show through your work. Ideally I personally love 90% freedom in a brief. 

IS: What are the artistic and cultural references that influence you?

QM: To name a few: Cubism, Russian matchboxes, pop art, vernacular, folk art, African art in general.. But I really like to be surrounded by nature to sketch, either at the beach or in the forest around home it’s really the thing I go back to if I’m looking for true inspiration.

IS: Do you think social media and online platforms are useful way to spread your works?

QM: Yes, it did help me a lot. I didn’t have a smartphone 4 years ago and just started posting illustrations with my girlfriend’s phone.

I quickly started to receive good feedbacks and getting small commissions. It’s good for your confidence but you can’t build a career based on this. 

IS: Upcoming future projects?

QM: Some group shows, art residency, and more travels!
